Hacienda Mérida is an accessible hotel.

We have made the commitment and investment to allow everyone to enjoy the beauties of Ometepe and to participate in our mission for sustainable and responsible living. The restaurant/sitting area has ramped access as do the rooms on the second floor (even if you are not staying up here, the view of the lake is beautiful and it's a great place to read). For the day visitor or dorm user, there is a communal bathroom, shower, and sink designed for easy wheelchair use.

Ojo de agua

The Ojo de Agua is the name of two swimming pools that are half-natural and half-artificial. The source of water is natural, the pools are made with cement and rocks, and the bottom is rocky and sandy. But this is not your ordinary municipal pool. The place kept its tropical look with the surrounding forest. Moreover, the water is refreshing! There is a Tarzan rope where you can swing into the water.

To get there:

The Ojo de Agua is located on the road between the two volcanos, roughly 2 km after Santo Domingo. From the entrance where you have to pay $2 USD per person, there is around 1km walk to get to the pools.

By bicycle: At the Hacienda Mérida you can rent mountain bikes and it takes around 1h to get to the Ojo de Agua by bike. The road is rocky and sandy in some places. At one point, the best place to ride is on the beach, riding on the wet sand. In any case, it is going to be HOT! Bring water.

By foot: You can also walk there. The only difference is that it is going to take you 3h instead of one. But the bumpy road won't affect your butt...

By Bus: the third option is to go by bus. Ask the driver to drop you off at the Ojo de Agua. It is faster, but you have to check the schedule and time your trip back with the bus.

What to expect:

The place can be quiet and relaxing or noisy with a lot of kids jumping all around. It is hard to know before being there. But it is usually packed with locals during the weekend. There is also a small restaurant that serves food and drinks by the pool. Whether it's deserted or packed, the swim is worth the time to get there.
