General Information

  • Your guide is there to make sure you have a safe, enjoyable trip and don’t lose your way on the trail.
    Note: hikers have gotten lost for as long as 36 hours. Use a guide and be careful.
  • If you hike from Finca Magdalena, there is $3 fee to access the trail.
  • The transportation cost one way to/from Finca Magdalena is $25US for up to 8 passengers.

To ensure a safe journey

  • Eat breakfast before you go.
  • Drink water and bring plenty of water with you to avoid dehydration.
  • If you are not used to hiking, try a trial run hike to the San Ramon waterfall (elevation 500 meters above the lake). If you find this hike too strenuous, the Madera's Volcano hike probably not for you.

Getting there

  • Start the hike on the Hacienda Merida side. If you decide you need to turn back, you'll be able to return to the Hacienda easily. This is the most pristine access trail. Starting form the Hacienda also saves you the Finca Magdalena entry fee)
  • Take your time. Don't rush. Leave early. If you would like to leave Hacienda Merida before 7:30am, let the kitchen staff know the night before. They’ll have breakfast ready for you at 6am. Note: tips are welcome to thank the staff for this special breakfast service.

What to expect

  • The hike is VERY muddy. Be prepared to get dirty.
  • Hike with small group of equally skilled/experienced hikers. With a larger group you are bound to have various skills levels, which can be frustrating for more advanced hikers and scary for the less experienced.
  • The hike will take 6-10 hours depending on conditions and your fitness level.
  • During the rainy season, the view may be limited due to cloudy conditions. The hike is still quite an adventure and well worth the time and effort. Likely, the clouds will clear as the afternoon progresses.

What to wear and bring

  • Prepare water (At least 3 liters per person. You can refill your bottle at the Hacienda Merida reception desk).
  • Sandwich/snacks
  • First aid kit.
  • Wear boots or sneakers (no sandals). Sturdy shoes are a must.
  • Sunscreen as it can get very hot and the sun is intense as you climb to a higher elevation.
  • Insect repellent.
  • $3.00 is you are going to access the trail at Finca Magdalena.
  • Bathing suit if you want to take a dip in the crater lake (it’s very cold but refreshing!).
  • Optional: change of clothing, hat, camera.
  • The cost of a guided hike for 1-3 people is $30US total. Note: if one person needs to turn back above the 800 meter mark, the entire group must turn back together. The guide will be paid, regardless of whether you finsh the hike or not.
