The School


Ometepe Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to community development on Ometepe Island.

We are looking for volunteers to teach English to local grade school and high school kids.

The Job


  1. Volunteers must commit to a minimum of 2 weeks.
  2. The fee for 2 weeks in the program is US$200, payable on arrival.
  3. Volunteers receive accommodation and food either with a local family, or at the Hacienda Merida.
  4. If staying in the Hacienda, and you consume anything above 3 meals a day and water this must be paid for independently. Tips for workers will be tabulated and charged at the end of your stay (10% of your total bill).
  5. Volunteers will have three two-hour classes of 10-15 students (9am-11am, 2pm-4pm and 5pm-7pm) Monday through Friday and one class Saturday morning (9am-11am).
  6. Within working hours volunteers are encouraged to do marketing, fundraising or figuring out how to strengthen the program.
  7. Laptops and high speed internet are available to the teachers and students, free of charge for school purposes.
  8. Tourists and organized groups are welcome to participate teaching one on one pronunciation or tutoring one on one.
  9. There are many qualified applicants, so we are not interested in participants who simply want to extend their vacation.
Ability to speak spanish is not a requirement, but it's a valuable asset.

Your Promise to Us


In addition to the above requirements, volunteers are expected to set a good example for the children. Remember, a teacher must be a good role model. This means being punctual, not smoking or drinking in front of children, preparing for classes and being ready to teach sharp and early.

In summary, we expect a professional attitude so that you and the kids get the most out of your time together.
